Valentine's Day Craft Ideas

Since I've been wrapped up in baby planning, I figured it might be a good distraction to think about the upcoming Valentine's Day holiday, since it's a perfect time to be crafty. Whether you are making favors for a kids party, food crafts or something for your honey - there are plenty of fun and unique ideas to choose from.

Here is a gorgeous project that I discovered last week from Paint Me Plaid (via Theresa Cifali) - click here for the full tutorial.

This next project, from Delish via Peter Piper Picked, is perfect as an inexpensive decoration and doubles as a sentimental gift. Using a small vase or candle holder, pictures and any type of heart-shaped or red candy, you can create these adorable decor pieces for just about anyone; significant other, best friend or even kids. In fact, I think I will attempt this for our house with some pictures of the baby and my hubby. Of course, the baby has to get here first!!

This may have something to do with my third-trimester junk food cravings (seriously, I made it to the final month before I started craving cookies all day) but I love this Valentine's Day Shortbread Cookie recipe from Diamonds for Dessert. Shortbread is one of my favorites and the cute colors and tiny shapes make these even cuter!

What kind of fun and festive ideas do you have in mind for Valentine's Day?

Diaper Cake Tutorial (Baby Shower Weekend)

In celebration of my baby shower being held this weekend, I thought it would be appropriate to post a tutorial for a project that just about anyone can do, not matter what their craft skills may be.

Diaper cakes are a cute and crafty gift, perfect for a mommy-to-be, no matter what gender her bundle of joy will be. Here is a simple tutorial if you would like to try one of these for a pregnant friend or family member.

This picture of the supplies is not exactly organized but here's the basics on what you will need:

  • Disposable or cloth diapers; decide how tall you want the cake to be or how much you want to spend, that will determine how many diapers you buy
  • A cardboard base; you can buy cake boards or cut a piece of study cardboard and cover with cute wrapping paper
  • Ribbon; choose your colors based on the gender and make sure to have many different widths
  • Clear elastic bands to secure rolled diapers
  • Rattles, socks, lotion, pacifiers - extra items for sides of cake
  • Glue gun, tape, scissors, flowers, and wine (for drinking, not decoration!)
  • Cellophane and ribbon for wrapping
The first step is to glue lace around the bottom cardboard base and then start rolling some diapers!

We used 52 for this cake and it took us about 15 minutes to roll them all. I was initially going to roll them and have Sandy tie them with ribbon but it would have taken too long. A quick trip to the store led us to the clear hair elastics in the picture and still saved about 45 minutes.

After the diapers are rolled, start lining them up on the base, with the edge facing in, until the outside of the board is covered in a ring of diapers. You may need to use a smidge of rolled tape under each to keep them upright while you are working. We stuffed the center with tissue paper but if you have enough diapers, you can use those to fill the entire circle.

Then, place a slightly smaller cardboard circle on top of the bottom level and repeat the process. We tied some ribbon around the bottom layer while we worked but it's just a temporary hold. The cake isn't sturdy at this point but you can secure it all once the diapers are in place.

Repeat the process from the first layer on the second and third (if applicable).

If you are using cloth diapers, you will find that as few as 30 will make a full, two tier cake but that will mean your cost could be significantly higher.

After we finished all three layers and wrapped the layers with thick, wired ribbon with smaller magenta ribbon on top, secured with hot glue, we realized that the top layer was too full (the picture on the side is  the goof-up before we fixed it). There was not enough of a difference between the middle layer and top layer so we simply pulled out one of the diapers from the top layer and pulled the ribbon tight with hot glue for security. Try not to get any glue on the diapers.

You can see there is one diaper left over in the middle, we used that and the diaper that we removed from the top layer, to hold a bottle of baby lotion in place on top of the cake, creating the illusion of another tier.

Once we fixed the top layer and positioned the lotion bottle, it was time to adorn the sides of the cake with teeny tiny socks, a package of pacifiers, a rattle (shaped like a diamond ring for the little diva!), small flowers and an adorable star washcloth, with a happy face to celebrate the joyous occasion!

Of course you will want to cover this cake to protect the diapers, now that they are out of the package. We used rolled cellophane and some ribbon to complete the gift. This also keeps the cake more secure for traveling as well.

The finished project cost approximately $30 for all the supplies. You can adjust the size of your own cake project based on your own budget. The recipient will certainly appreciate the thoughtfulness of this personalized gift, no matter how much you spend. Happy crafting!

Hawaii 5-0 Party Weekend

This weekend left little time for crafting around here. Between baby preparations, appliance shopping and birthday celebrations - I was exhausted!

Here are some pictures from my uncle's 50th birthday party this weekend. You can see that I am sporting one serious baby bump too...

Gorgeous tropical handmade centerpieces

Live entertainment including Hula lessons and fire dancing!

Tiki cake - pineapple flavored, of course

And finally, me & my honey and our bundle of joy

We've just hit the six-month mark in this pregnancy and it definitely feels strange to see myself looking so different! But I've been feeling great and I'm sure the next 3 months will fly by with the holidays and all, so I'm trying to enjoy it. We had a wonderful time celebrating with family this weekend. I'm hoping to get back to crafting this week...I do have a craft fair coming up and all. Yikes! :)

Painted Boston Red Sox Pumpkin

Tonight is the last night of regular season MLB baseball and like every other Red Sox fan, I'm on the edge of my seat hoping that they can lock up a Wild Card playoff spot. Here's one of my favorite crafts ever - a fall pumpkin that I hand-painted to show my spirit!

Helpful tip - I covered the entire pumpkin with a clear coat of spray paint to extend the life of the design.

Cute & Festive Halloween Cupcakes

My plan is to spend some time this weekend working on a few tag sale/thrift store treasures that need a little love. I'm excited to display them around the house when finished...

In the meantime, I've been discovering some amazing baked confections this week online and if I had all the time in the world - I would definitely be making all of these different cupcakes! Click on the links to view the full tutorials.

The strange thing is that I don't even like actual candy corn but there's no denying how cute cupcakes look with candy corn decorations.

What are you cooking up for the Halloween holiday?

Crafty Links - Babycakes Approved

It's Monday and while I'm full of energy, I'm going to make sure I use it on my lamp project. I used yellow fabric paint last night on the alternating panels. The goal is to try and make it unisex, while I try to be patient for the next week before we find out if this little bean is a boy or a girl.

In the meantime, let's check out some crafty links!
  • Another food craft project that sadly for me, involves liquor. But I will keep it on the list for a fun party dessert in the future - Vodka Soaked Gummy Bears from That's So Michelle. Looks like this would work with gummy Life Savers too. Yum!!
  • I'm beginning to really love anything with pinwheels and these Pinwheel Placemats are no exception! Spruce up some plain mats that you already have or find some at the thrift store for this fun project from Positively Splendid

  • Finally, for a healthy and easy to make flag dessert, here is my own creation - made with layers of low fat pound cake, whipped cream, strawberries and blueberries. You could also use angel food cake for an even healthier option.

    Decoupage Candle Holder Tutorial

Awhile back, I posted the results of one of my weekend projects - some fun zebra decoupage candle holders. I wanted to post a simple tutorial for anyone looking to make these themselves.

I started with a set of small wine glasses, passed along to me in a box of craft supplies by my grandmother. I cut up some zebra tissue paper into rectangles, not too worried about them being the same size but not making them too small either.

With my trusty bottle of Modge Podge, I got to work attaching the tissue paper to the glass with a small paint brush...

You don't have to be too careful during this process, a little bit of texture looks very cool when it's all dried.

When I was finished with the tissue paper and the candle holders were dry, I added a line of strung sequins to the top rim. Voila!

This set was the first sale of my first craft fair of 2011. I would definitely like to make more! Finding glass pieces to use is easy if you check out your local consignment shop or tag sales. Here is another variation on this project, using hot pink tissue paper, black sequins and leopard print ribbon.

And finally, one more candle holder project using this technique...

I always sell these with LED candles inside so they are safe for homes with children and pets.

Hope you enjoy this tutorial and happy crafting!

    Mad Men Spring Floral Arrangement

And this is what happens when I have the day off and my imagination runs away with me. I'm going to go so far as to say this Mad Men flower arrangement is definitely one-of-a-kind!

I had the vases left over from our wedding reception centerpieces and the flowers were from an arrangement I got this morning. From left to right, Betty Draper with her pearls and apron on, dashing Don Draper in his suit & tie, Peggy in the middle with her classy, no fuss get-up, and finally Joan in her signature red and dapper Roger Sterling are on the end. It might seem like a waste of time but I had fun and that's all that matters. If you had the day off today, I hope you enjoyed it too!

    Themed Party Decorations for Less

One of the things I love most about being a grown-up is having gatherings at the house. Whether it's holidays, birthdays or any celebrated event, I enjoy throwing parties, especially when it comes to decorating!

The best party decorating tip I've ever gotten came from my friend Beth; each holiday season, she wraps all of the pictures in her house with holiday and Christmas themed wrapping paper. With a few ribbons, bows and other festive accessories, this decoration is inexpensive, easy to accomplish and it can stay up all season long. As per usual, I don't have any examples of my own handy work from this past holiday but here is a great example (from the Woman of Gloucester County website):

When we hosted my friend Kerry's bridal shower last year, I took that same idea and personalized it to her taste. It made the house look colorful, fun and totally unique.

We used another variation of this for our own party last month. Every February, Bunch and I hold a Winter BBQ for our friends and this year was our 7th one. In honor of that, we went with a James Bond 007 theme but it was surprisingly difficult to find decorations at the normal party supply stores. I took this same wrapping paper idea and made it work for this event as well:

I used plain black wrapping paper and print-outs from Google images to create this (and other) fun James Bond decorations around the house.

Use your crafty nature and imagination for showers, themed birthdays & holidays. Happy decorating!
